Count chemicals, not Calories

Feeling overwhelmed?

Instead of obsessing about calorie and fat gram counting, why not count chemicals instead?

Health Made Simple: that's my motto.

Flashback to me in college: I would eat boxes and boxes of Snackwell’s chocolate fudge cookies. I thought it was ok to eat the whole box (or boxes) because they were low fat.

Of course, after eating the whole box of cookies, I felt shame and remorse, not to mention a stomachache.

When the fat is removed from processed foods, what it gets replaced with is more sugar, preservatives, artificial sweeteners and colors, and trans fats.

Oh, how I wish I could travel back in time and tell my 22 year old self, just eat the real full fat chocolate cookie, enjoy every single bite, feel satisfied and more on without guilt and shame.

When you know better, you do better.

That’s why I teach what I teach.

When fat is removed from foods and additional chemical sweeteners are added, it can trigger our cravings (and binges). We want more and more food  because we aren’t satisfied.  Healthy fat is not bad, in fact, it satisfies us.

Luckily, in the last 20 years in the nutrition and wellness industry, there has been a movement away from low fat and an increased focus on whole fat and less processed foods.

So instead of tracking the calorie count and fat grams on the nutrition label of every box, why not look at the ingredient list and make sure you are eating ingredients that you can pronounce.

Here are some simple ways to eat less chemicals, reduce cravings and have more energy.

  1. More fresh food, less boxed food.

  2. Focus on quality, rather than quantity: Pay more for your food and eat less.

  3. When eating packaged food, look for less than 5 ingredients.

  4. Look for ingredients that sound like food, not chemicals: you should be able to pronounce the ingredients.

  5. Ditch the supermarket for the farmer’s market

  6. At the supermarket, focus on veggies, fruits, meats, fish, grains, nuts and healthy oils.

There is WAY more to healthy living than calorie counting, label reading and food tracking. Ditch the low fat and low calorie foods and embrace eating real foods that satisfy you.  I love teaching clients how to eat in a way that fuels their busy days and gives them energy.
